The causes of dog respiratory infections can be tricky to identify since infections could be caused by multiple pathogens. Among all the pathogens, canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parainfluenza virus (CPIV), canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2), and Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb) are the most common pathogens causing dog respiratory diseases.

• CDV: Puppies are the most susceptible to CDV infection, and the mortality rate can reach 80-90%. Symptoms include loss of appetite and a fever ranging from 39.5-41°C.
• CPIV: Infections can affect dogs of any age and young dogs are most likely to suffer from this illness, which can be fatal. Symptoms include fever, cough, a runny nose, and others.
• CAV-2: Most common in puppies under 4 months of age; symptoms include persistent high fever, cough, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
• Bb: All types and stages of dogs can be infected, but young dogs are more at risk. Coughing and runny nose are the main symptoms.
